For this shoot I wanted to further develop on my movement using self portraiture in the style of Francesca Woodman, experimenting with different locations. Therefore I experimented with the use of nature and snow outside to portray the mental illness through movement. Using the outside as a new location appeared to be more trialling as I constantly had to adjust my camera settings depending on the amount of light at the time. However, in terms of experimenting with a new location I think this shoot has been fairly successful as I have managed to combine movement, self-portraiture and nature together in my shoots.
This image portrays a figure with their face blurred out. The background is full with trees and the floor is completely white suggesting there is snow on the ground. The image is black and white creating a high contrast between the figure and the trees.
I think this image has been fairly successful in experimenting with movement using long shutter speeds outside. Through extending the use of movement in the face to other locations such as the park, I wanted to portray the fact that no matter where a person is they still suffer from their mental health condition and so they may be trying to protect themselves no matter where they are. If I was to re-shoot this image I would change my camera settings as I feel this image has been slightly over-exposed. The combination of natural light and the long shutter speed which was needed to achieve the movement, resulted in an image that was a bit too light.
I then went back to the location of the house to develop further on my use of different objects. Furthermore, I wanted to experiment with my use of angles and natural light using windows. I think this re-shoot has been successful and there are some images that I am going to use as part of my final selection.
This image shows a young girl lying across a chair. The figure appears to be looking straight at the camera, however is isn't clear as the face has been blurred out due to movement. The image is black and white creating a high contrast between the subjects black clothes and the white wall. Furthermore, the grittiness of the floor is highlighted as a result of the high contrast.
I think this image has been successful in combining self-portraiture and movement in the style of Francesca Woodman whilst experimenting with different objects. I think the use of the chair and the composition in which the I am lying across the chair hints at a slight vulnerability. The blurred face with a lack of facial features as well as the way the subject is hugging the chair suggests that the figure is trying to protect themselves from everything and maybe everyone around them.
