Development Nine-Movement- Francesca Woodman Style

I decided to develop the use of movement further in my photography incorporating the style of Francesca Woodman. To achieve this I used the house which was previously occupied by people who suffered from mental health conditions as the location for my shoot. I experimented with different objects such as a mirror as this is something Francesca Woodman uses in her photography, as well as different locations within the house such as the cellar. I think this has been a successful shoot and there are some images within this shoot that I will use for final images. I am going to develop this shoot further, doing another one in the same location but experimenting with more objects.

This image shows a young girl within a mirror. The mirror is on the floor propped against a wall that appears to have been stripped bare, revealing the grittiness underneath. The image is black and white creating a high contrast, making the stains and dirt on the wall and floor stand out further. The girls face is blurred out meaning there are no facial features visible.

I think this image has been successful in exploring with both movement and self-portraiture on location. I wanted to develop on my previous shoot using the grittiness of the house as my backdrop, something I have managed to achieve, I think the use of the mirror to portray the figure of the girl creates depth within the image as well as creating a feeling of isolation something I think people who suffer from mental health conditions can often feel on a daily basis. The lack of facial features as a result of the movement suggest that maybe the figure in the mirror is trying to protect themselves from the outside world by hiding themselves. Or it could be interpreted that the movement of the face which  has created a blur represents the inner turmoil this particular person may be feeling as a result of their mental health problems.

This image portrays a young girl sat on the floor in a corner of a room. She is wearing black which contrasts with the wall she is leaning against, further aided by the black and white of the image. There is part of a window visible in the image with natural daylight streaming through it, suggesting that is what has lit the shoot. The wall and the floor appear to have been stripped bare suggesting the girl is residing in a house that is empty and has been abandoned for a long period of time.

I think this image has been successful as it portrays the vulnerability that I was aiming for. The composition in which the figure is crouched in the corner on the floor with her arms wrapped around herself suggests she is frightened and scared, emotions often felt within individuals who suffer from mental illnesses. Furthermore, the angle in which the image has been taken adds to the sense of vulnerability as the camera is looking down on the figure making the subject appear very small in comparison to the space around her.
