Unit 3 Personal Investigation

Over the summer, I started to think about what I would like to explore in my personal investigation. To aid my research and decision in which topic I would choose and explore, I took one hundred initial shots of anything that captured my interest. Therefore the images start off very general, however throughout the process of taking photos, I started to become aware of what it is I wanted to explore in my personal investigation. Therefore, as the images progress, they start to become more personalised to my project title which is Mental Illness. The images are not specific to one area of mental illness as I didn't want to narrow my project down too much at the start  but rather, I wanted to draw inspiration for my project later on.

It is from this point on that my photographs are focused on mental illness as I now knew that it is this topic i wanted to explore.

Analysis of a few images...

Objectively, this image shows a row of white pills on a black background. There is a high contrast within the images, due to the colours that have been used. I chose to do this image with the pills, because I think it represents just one part of the life of a person with a mental illness, in a simple way. I wanted to show just one factor that people with mental illnesses have to deal with on a day to day basis. Overall I am pleased with the way the shot has turned out, especially in terms of the contrast between the background and the subject, which therefore puts more emphasis onto the pills, making them seem even more powerful.

Objectively, his image shows a clump of pills, some white with an oblong shape, and some red, with a circular shape. They are encased in a blur of colours around the outside, and then a black background. Just I did with the previous image, I wanted to convey a similar meaning within this image. I wanted to focus on one factor that someone with a mental illness has to deal with, but through still life, rather than with people as my subjects. However, in this image, I wanted to incorporate some colour, to make the image look more interesting and brighter. To create this image, I used a small plastic cup/container with the pills inside, and I then placed it on a black background to shoot the image. I then placed my camera lens right above the top of the cup, giving the effect of blurred colours around the edge. I think this image was a success because I have achieved an interesting effect within my work, as well as creating an interesting contrast in colours.
