I took these images using inspiration from my photographer Daniel Regan. In Daniel Regan's project, he uses abandoned mental health hospitals to shoot images. These images were all taken in the cellar of a house in which people who had various different mental illnesses used to live. I focused on particular objects within the cellar, using the still life genre to inform my shoot. I think this shoot has been successful as it both incorporates Daniel Regan's particular style as well as my own personal black and white, grainy style of photography. I will use some of these images as part of my final selection, portraying mental illness through a mixture of still life and portraiture.
Objectively, this image shows a set of stairs. The image has been taken from the top of the stairs showing the descent of them. Even though the image is in black and white, there is minimal contrast, possibly as a result of the grain evident within the image. There are shadows that have been cast in the image, as a result of a light that isn't present.
In this image I wanted to portray a sense of abandonment and isolation through the use of cellar stairs. I wanted to use the raw grittiness of both the stairs and the surrounding walls to portray the past life of someone who suffered from a mental illness. just as Daniel Regan has done in his series 'Abandoned'. I think this image has been successful as it portrays the concept I wanted.
This image portrays two door frames in one shot. Both of the door frames are missing doors, allowing the viewer to see right back to the end wall. The walls are white with spots of black in them, highlighted through the use of black and white and the resulting high contrast. The lack of doors as well as the grittiness of the room suggest there was a lack of care put into the house, something I wished to photograph in order to portray the loneliness of the house which may have echoed the feelings of the occupants who suffered from mental health conditions.
